Probably most of people have recently heard about that BIG METEOR IN RUSSIA that happened today. Here I’m giving you my excerpt from the Slate article by a well-known astronomer and writer Phil Plait (“Bad Astronomer” – he is one of my favorite science guys).
A big meteor burned up over Chelyabinsk at cca. 09:30 local time (YEKT=UTC/GMT +6 hours). Chelyabinsk lies east of the Ural mountains, in Russia (and is located cca. 1500 km east of Moscow).“The fireball was incredibly bright, rivaling the Sun! There was a pretty big sonic boom from the fireball, which set off car alarms and shattered windows. “
Some reports are that many people were injured (by shattered glass blown out by the shock wave). Some other reports say that some pieces have fallen to the ground (unconfirmed).
Many videos are being uploaded on YouTube, and some of them are incredible. Some of the videos show the meteor coming through the atmosphere. Some other show the trail of smoke in the sky, and 27 seconds shock wave; the sonic boom. And it’s loud.
Also, there are many jaw-dropping photos emerging.
The meteor trail appeared some time before the explosion was heard (which is consistent with it being the shock wave from the passage of the meteoroid through our atmosphere high above the ground.) Some people may think that is the sound from the explosion from the impact, but according to Phil Plait, “it is more likely to be the sonic boom from something big moving at multiple times the speed of sound through the air.”
The trail appears to split. That means the chunks of it may have disintegrated at different times and there may be multiple places where pieces have fallen.
This event is not related to the asteroid 2102 DA14 that will pass on Friday; this occurred about 16 hours before DA14 passes at 8 km per second, nearly half a million km away from DA14 on a totally different orbit. “It looks like this was moving mostly east-to-west. I may be off, but that’s how it looks. DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, so any fragment of that rock would also appear to move south to north. So again, I think this is unrelated to 2012 DA14. But wow, what a huge coincidence! “
“Note also lots of hoaxes are turning up. Be cautious and be skeptical.” [By the way, IMHO this is a great advice, not only in this case…]
